Roughly 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then located multiple other marked cars and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report initial examinations suggest the liquid was probably human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; investigators are not yet informed of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have appealed to the public for information.
An important official stated the incident left him without words and required to be solved rapidly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist attack in 2020," he posted on online, referring to the murder of nine people by a shooter aiming at residents of migrant background in 2020.
