The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.
This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a document approving the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.
The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.
He is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his ideological adversary, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was took office without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
