RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
